Battle On!

Win Duels using these classic cards from the Battle City tournament!

By John Bae June 18, 2015

Duelist Pack: Battle City is the first Duelist Pack that’s focused on a storyline instead of one particular character. So, instead of having only cards used by Yugi or Kaiba, it’s got cards used by Yugi, Kaiba, Joey, Marik, Arkana, Bakura and so on! It even has five new cards that were used by a variety of villainous characters during the Battle City tournament!

Arkana’s Anti-Magic Arrows seal off Spell/Trap Cards and their effects for the rest of the turn and can’t be Chained to in any way. You have to activate them at the start of the Battle Phase though, so you’ll need to consider carefully whether you want to risk Summoning monsters while your opponent’s Traps are active, or if you’re willing to give up some attacks to make your Summons safely.

As a self-proclaimed master of the Dark Magician, Arkana also uses Legion the Fiend Jester. Appearing for the first time in Duelist Pack: Battle City, Legion gives you an extra Normal Summon to use on a Spellcaster-Type monster each turn and lets you add a Spellcaster-Type Normal Monster from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand if it’s sent from the field to the Graveyard.

Bakura’s Multiple Destruction can offset the extra drawn card your opponent gets when you go first in a Duel. While both players have at least three cards in their hand, you can use Multiple Destruction to put both players’ hands at the bottom of their Decks and replace them with a new five-card hand. Be careful though, since you'll lose 300 Life Points for every card that was placed on the bottom of the Decks!

Marik’s Juragedo is the perfect companion to anyone trying to unleash The Winged Dragon of Ra. You can Special Summon it during the Battle Phase and gain 1000 Life Points, giving you both an extra monster to Tribute for Ra and extra Life Points to increase Ra’s ATK. Juragedo can also increase any monster’s ATK by 1000 until the end of the next turn, but you have to Tribute it to do so.

And finally, Duelist Pack: Battle City introduces The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode (see the 06-22-2015 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump for a feature on this card), the mysterious orb-like monster that appeared when Mai wrested The Winged Dragon of Ra out of Marik’s hand and played it as her own monster!
