Normally, Life Points are just a measure of how close each Duelist is to winning or losing the Duel. As Duelists take damage from battles or card effects, they get closer and closer to losing. Effects that let you gain LP usually don’t do anything else, so Duelists don’t go out of their way to find and use them. All that could change thanks to Clash of Rebellions' fresh and relaxing Aromage strategy!

The Aromages are Plant-Type monsters with two effects each. One of the effects activates if you gain LP, and the other switches on and stays on for as long as you have more LP than your opponent. Aromage Jasmine, for example, lets you draw an extra card when you gain LP and gives you a second Normal Summon to use on a Plant-Type monster each turn while you have more LP than your opponent.

Gaining LP may seem like a purely defensive strategy, but the various Aromage effects are all offense. Jasmine helps you draw and field more monsters. Aromage Cananga weakens all enemy monsters by 500 ATK and DEF while you have more LP and kicks a Spell or Trap back to the hand when you gain LP. Aromage Rosemary shifts the battle position of a monster when you gain LP and suppresses the activation of monster effects while your monsters are attacking as long as you lead on LP. Aromage Bergamot gains 1000 ATK and DEF when you gain LP and allows all your monsters to inflict piercing battle damage while your LP is higher than that of your opponent!

The trick to using Aromages successfully is making sure that you have a mix of cards that let you gain LP constantly over time, and one-shot cards that let you gain LP at any time.

Aroma Garden is a Field Spell that lets you gain 500 LP during your Main Phase if you control an Aromage and then gives all of your monsters 500 extra ATK and DEF until the end of your opponent’s turn. It also lets you gain 1000 LP if one of your Aromages is destroyed, leaving the rest of them to trigger all of their effects again. Humid Winds is a Continuous Trap Card that lets you pay 1000 LP to add any “Aroma” monster from your Deck to your hand, but also lets you gain 500 LP each turn if you’re behind on the scoreboard. Both of these cards are vital to making sure you can use your effects again and again.

You can also try one-shot cards like Poison of the Old Man from the Saber Force Starter Deck that gives you the choice of gaining 1200 LP or inflicting 800 damage to your opponent. Juragedo, from Duelist Pack: Battle City can be Special Summoned mid-battle on either player’s turn to give you 1000 LP and give one of your monsters 1000 extra ATK. Having the flexibility to use these cards at the most crucial moments of the Duel makes it way easier to use Dried Winds, a Trap that destroys an enemy monster if you gain LP!
