Nihongo Lesson 04/17/15

Learning Japanese can be a "magical" experience!

By John Bae April 17, 2015

Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson will focus on magic…again! In honor of the new series Black Clover, we will focus on the different types of magic that can be seen in your favorite Weekly Shonen Jump series. Once again this week, I, the new TEAM JUMP girl, am magically replacing Professor Jump to bring you another important lesson! At this point you might as well call me Professor Jump 2.0!!

MARYOKU (まりょく)

MARYOKU means “Magical Power.” Magical powers in Black Clover are super important. One’s magical talents determine one’s path for the future. That’s why all of the Magic Knights’ leaders wanted Yuno and why many people thought that Asta had no future in the Magic Knights. He proved them wrong with his magic of never giving up! That, and he can pull out a magic-negating sword from his Grimoire to crush his enemies… Pretty useful.

MIZU (みず)

MIZU means “water.” Noelle is one of the first characters in Black Clover to use water magic. She cannot control her magic very well, but she sure is powerful! She is a really strong, spunky female character, and I hope to see more from her and her water magic in future chapters!

KOORI (こおり)

KOORI means “ice.” The first villain in Black Clover appears, and his ice magic is a force to be reckoned with! Just imagine going up against all of those ice shards! Pretty scary, huh? Even with Magna’s fire magic, it’s difficult to keep up with this foe. Everyone on TEAMP JUMP is cheering the Black Bulls on! You can do it!!
