Nihongo Lesson 04/29/16

Spring into action and learn these Japanese words!

By John Bae April 29, 2016

Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week's lesson will feature terms about spring. This is the time of year when the cherry blossoms bloom and Japan is all about making viewing them a social occasion. If you've read a decent amount of manga or watched a lot of anime, you've surely been exposed to this tradition.

Nl Spring 2SAKURA (さくら)

We've featured this word before, but it's always good to review. SAKURA is not only one of the strongest female characters in Naruto, it also means "cherry blossom." SAKURA generally begin blooming in southern Japan in late March and move northward over the next few weeks. The last place to see the blossoms is Hokkaido, which can happen as late as the end of April. The dates change year to year, so you have to be vigilant if you hope to experience this beautiful tradition!

HANAMI (はなみ)

HANAMI literally means "to see flowers" and refers to the social event of having a picnic under the SAKURA. This is almost always accompanied by some yummy food and plenty of alcoholic beverages. HANAMI is done with family and friends and even as a company outing. Which Shonen Jump characters would you like to HANAMI with? Would it get much better than hanging out under the cherry blossoms with the Straw Hat crew from One Piece? Talk about a fun time!
