Learn the Japanese word that perfectly describes Chitoge from Nisekoi!
Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week's lesson will focus on a unique term used in anime and manga fandom. If you've been listening to the Shonen Jump podcast, you've surely heard us argue over this type of term. Hopefully this week's lesson can help erase any potential confusion!
TSUNDERE (ツンデレ)
The term TSUNDERE comes up a lot in manga and anime. It generally refers to a character who is initially cold and mean but who gradually warms up over time. Noelle from Black Clover is a good example of a TSUNDERE and the panel below is a perfect illustration of it.
On the outside she is mean, but inside she is a sweetheart. Other popular TSUNDERE characters include Chitoge from Nisekoi. She's always mean or angry at Raku, but inside she's beating herself up for being unable to express her true feelings. Hopefully she can graduate from this plight and tell Raku how she really feels! Who's your favorite TSUNDERE?
