Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week's lesson takes inspiration from our newest JUMP BACK, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. Main character Jotaro finds himself in jail after a run-in with the police. Hopefully none of you will need to know these terms, but let's learn them just in case!

KEISATSU (けいさつ)

KEISATSU means "police." JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has some interesting police characters, but the ones in the first chapter of Stardust Crusaders are actually pretty understanding. They want Jotaro to leave the jail even though his mom thought he might have killed a bunch of people. Turns out he's just possessed by an evil spirit—no biggie.

TAIHO (たいほ)

TAIHO means "arrest," as in "to be arrested." I wonder just how these police officers were able to arrest Jotaro. He doesn't seem like the type of guy to go down easily. He must have voluntarily turned himself in because of his evil spirit. That's the only explanation that makes sense! By the way, has anyone noticed the way Jotaro's hat and hair appear to be fused together? That's definitely the most bizarre thing about this series!

KEIMUSHO (けいむしょ)

KEIMUSHO is a prison or a jail. As far as I know, you don't get to read Shonen Jump in jail. Only Jotaro gets that privilege! Though even with the manga and radio, I think I'd still rather be hanging out in the dungeon Raku and company were thrown into a few chapters ago in Nisekoi. Maybe that's just because the Nisekoi gang seems fun to be with no matter what the situation!
