VIZ Style Sheet: Connor Sheehan

How cool and stylish can an "IT guy" be... at VIZ?

By Annette Roman September 14, 2016

At VIZ we have a "style sheet" for each title, and now we’re adopting the term for this weekly series about style at our office! We are a diverse group, but we have one thing in common: we love manga, anime and Japanese pop culture. Luckily, we don't have a strict dress code. So set aside your expectations of "work safe" looks and enjoy this sneak peek into the style, clothes and lives of VIZ employees…

Come back each Wednesday to see new looks to complement your own unique style! And you can see all our Style Sheet posts here.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
Eugene, Oregon.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK FOR YOU?
There isn't really such a thing as a "typical day" in IT. Some days (recently) involve running around all day making sure everyone's tech needs for a convention are ready and having plans in case something breaks on the show floor, while other days are a bit... less exciting and more focused on making sure everyone's computer is running as well as possible and that freelancers and staff can access all the files they need to work.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE?
I used to dress a lot more... out there... than I do now. The more college went on, the more my style became tamed into wearing button-downs every day. But then I graduated and came to VIZ and went a little bit back into my ways of dressing from high school, just tamer than it was 6 years ago. I ended up with a lot of band shirts, so I wear those (fingers crossed I won't realize these bands are atrocious like I did with the bands whose shirts I wore in high school).

HOW IS YOUR STYLE INFLUENCED BY MANGA, ANIME OR JAPANESE FASHION?
Well, I dyed my hair blue... That definitely would not have happened if I wasn't as embedded in anime and manga culture as I am here.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CLOTHING STORES AND FASHION WEBSITES?
I honestly don't really like shopping for clothes unless it's shoes, which I have a dumb amount of and yet still wear the same pair of plain Vans every day. I ended up getting a subscription service for clothes from Five Four Club, where every month they send some shirts or pants or whatever, and that's been working well.

WHAT FASHION ACCESSORY CAN YOU ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
Either a hat when I'm feeling exceptionally lazy in the morning and don't want to do my hair, or Gatsby's Moving Rubber. It's this hair wax from Japan I started using last year when my old wax just didn't cut it anymore and I'll never look back—it works great. My go-to is the purple one, and it smells like green apple, which is a plus.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK AS A CREATIVE OUTLET AND FOR FUN?
I got my degree in music, and when you're in school forced to do something every day, its really easy to get burned out on something you would normally love. So now that I'm doing something completely different, I've really enjoyed getting back into playing music on my own time.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CURRENT VIZ MANGA OR ANIME?
The Food Wars manga is great, and now with the free chapters on the Shonen Jump website, I've really been enjoying The Emperor and I, which is a slice-of-life manga about living with an emperor penguin.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE VIZ MANGA OR ANIME OF ALL TIME?
Death Note is the show that got me into anime, so that one will always have a special place with me. Pokémon too—at the time I didn't even realize it was anime, it was just this cartoon all my friends and I watched. To this day, I still have VHS copies of episodes from elementary school with the old VIZ Video logo on the covers.
