Which series should be added to WSJ Alpha?

Submitted by dUsTeAtEr on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 14:26

I'm dissapointed that Reborn! isn't being added or even continuing its graphic novel releases. Hunter x Hunter is another series deserving to be added.

Monthly series are being ignored as well - Tegami Bachi, Claymore, D. Gray-Man, Blue Exorcist, and Ultimo should show up once a month (or with Ultimo's case, once every 3 months, now that it's switching magazines and getting slower releases). Simultaneous releases of these monthly series would be awesome!

Which series do you think needs to be added to the magazine?

I forgot to include Enigma. Now that is an enjoyable read. It has a fantastic story. I also forgot Hunter x Hunter, but i guess i don't really need to say since everyone else mentioned it.

Most likely, they are basing the titles running in WSJA on how well the English volumes are selling and their overall popularity.

And naturally, they have to be ongoing manga *currently* running in *Weekly Shonen Jump* (not Jump S.Q.) that are available for licensing and which are "proven" in Japan, meaning they're popular enough to not get cancelled and have a solid following or an anime adaptation.

ST&RS, for example, is only 30 chapters in, and isn't very popular in the reader polls. If it continues to do poorly in the polls, it'll wind up getting canceled. Then that would be a huge waste of an investment on VIZ Media's part.

Hunter X Hunter also tends to get serialized irregularily, since it goes on hiatus so frequently. I would be nervous about licensing it for English serialization knowing that could suddenly happen again.

For people suggesting manga that aren't in Weekly Shonen Jump, or which are serialized in S.Q. (a monthly 'zine), or which have already completed serialization, well, it's just not going to happen.

In Japan, One Piece, Naruto, and Toriko are almost always the top three in reader polls lately.

After them in popularity are Bakuman, Beelzebub, Gintama, Reborn, and Sket Dance, which are always shuffeling around, with Bakuman and Gintama making it into the top 5 most frequently.

Bleach has fallen quite a bit in popularity and is usually somewhere around 7th-10th place, but it's not going to just get cancelled and it still does well in the US.

Nura is usually towards the bottom of the pack, but it's also got a new anime and video game, so it's at least got merchandising and anime options, which is probably why VIZ licensed it.

As much as I don't want to believe you, I agree and think it is true. They do translate the manga that are really popular and would make a profit. I'd like for Viz to have English versions of a lot of past manga, but it looks like I'll just have to buy the books in Japanese haha.

I've been in the manga industry for 15 years. I edited YuYu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter. I've read about a bazillion manga, and when anyone asks me what my favorite one is, I never hesitate to say - Hunter X Hunter.

All this Hunter X Hunter love warms the cockles of my heart.

I always wondered why didn't they make Greed Island into a Collectible Card Game?!

It would be perfect!

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll point this thread out to my superiors.

I have a lot of superiors!

I know it's not currently running, but I'm surprised that Akira Toriyama's "Kajika" hasn't even been published here yet, let alone the one-shot collections and Hetappi Manga Lab. They don't have to be in SJ Alpha, but be published as tankobon. We did get "Sand Land" and "Cowa!" though, so I was surprised "Kajika" hasn't been considered. The Hetappi book in particular was one of my most-wanted books since Jump came out here 10 years ago.

I'm going to say this again, add! Hunter x Hunter!!!

If they added hxh I'd die. Seriously though, we need to get the word out on how good that series is

Hunter x Hunter is a must for Shonen Jump Alpha's Lineup

Submitted by zephray on Sat, 02/11/2012 - 20:08

we seriously do need Hunter X Hunter... I've been reading it since Jump started it back in 2005 and it became a series that helped me grow as a person. Now, 21 years old, I'm still reading Hunter X Hunter. And even after it's long hiatuses in Japan, it is back now on a weekly basis for good, and it is still keeping me on edge week after week. We need a series like this that can differ from adventure and fighting yet still have these elements intact.

We need Hunter X Hunter. Especially where the scanlations are no longer allowed.

I don't think I can emphasize this enough. If you go out of your way to make sure someone stops distributing a property that you think you can make money off of, then RELEASE THE DARN PROPERTY YOURSELVES. Don't make the fans suffer by being stingy.

If you don't plan on releasing anything related to REBORN! yourselves, then let someone who actually cares do it, and maybe hire them to do it for a fraction of what you pay your employees. Seeing as, you know, they essentially did it over at MangaStream for free. They did it out of their own dedication to the series and kindness to the fans. Please, just at least start including Reborn! to SJA (preferably with a more direct translation, none of this "Deathperation" and "HOLY HAT" crap, because that was just plain disrespectful). I'd enjoy if I could give Viz my money every two months so I could buy Volume 17 and onward as well. But I'd at least like to see the outcome of the Arcobaleno Battles.

The only thing that's preventing me from getting Alpha is the lack of series :(

I also read all of these series that are in Jump:

Hunter x Hunter
Gintama
Beelzebub
Medaka Box
Katekyō Hitman Reborn!
Nisekoi
Magico
Kurogane

(In order of which I'd love to be in).

If the top 4-5 of that list went in I'd love it<333. If Viz is actually reading my post, thanks for your time<3.

I absolutely love Reborn!

I was devastated when VIZ put it on hiatus. This is the perfect opportunity to release the remaining graphic novels and to put it in SJA.

Submitted by KexCormacson on Sun, 02/12/2012 - 20:39

I agree COMPLETELY. They need to get on this, because I'm ridiculously pissed that I can't see how this arc is going to turn out.

Submitted by woma24 on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 13:18

yeah we need HXH and some KHR why does viz only have 6 titles we need more titles i will gladly give money if the have those mangas

Submitted by AmaranthSparrow on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 00:07

I'll add my own suggestion for series to add, in order:

Reborn
Gintama
Beelzebub
Sket Dance

That would bring it up to a total of 10 series. Hunter X Hunter is always in danger of going on hiatus so I think translating the tankobon only is fine. I don't know that the other series have a big enough following yet, as they don't even perform that well in Japan.

If it continues to do well, they can of course keep adding more.

Submitted by FrankyCenaur on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 00:13

Reborn and Gintama do very very well in Japan- Gintama has been one of Jump's biggest series for a long time (though less recognized because its a comedy and not a shonen action series.)

The other two do decently in Japan. Still, decent in Japan completely puts American comic sales to shame... :P

Submitted by woma24 on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 13:23

well Reborn
Gintama
Beelzebub
Sket Dance have bean doing really good in the rankings so the probably have big enough following and there always in the top 10 comic rankings

Submitted by lucky1386 on Wed, 02/15/2012 - 11:38

Personally mangareader.net updates weekly as well and is at least 3 chapters ahead, but i still support SJ. D.Grayman is quite popular and is still going. Tegami Bachi is also going. It was cancelled in the old SJ but it would be a good addition. HunterxHunter and Gin Tama are also good choices since they both have a good following in both Japan and the USA. Another YU-GI-OH manga could be an option, but since the anime's seem to be more popular, it might be a better idea to keep them out of the magazine and just stick to anime updates. Rosario+Vampire is a personal favorite of mine. It's got a decent following, but in monthly. As are Tegami and Grayman. Since Bleach is on its last arc, Ao No Exorcist, Blue Exorcist in America, would be a good replacement. Soul Eater is interesting, but not a lot of people read it. Claymore and Reborn are also good candidates,

Submitted by CeoleMizurai on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 13:25

D.Gray-Man would be an excellent addition to SJAlpha. It's not over yet and it's an under-rated series to some readers.

Submitted by karasking4862 on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 15:11

I agree, I want D. Grayman in SJ Alpha, it's one of my fav's & its awesome!

Submitted by AmaranthSparrow on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 16:52

D.Gray-man isn't published in Weekly Shonen Jump. It's a monthly series running in the magazine JUMP S.Q.

Submitted by otterin on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 16:30

The Reborn series definitely deserves a redemption shot in Aplha. One of the reasons it didn't do well in America was because of how poorly the series was treated. In all honesty, the translations were extremely terrible, character traits such as unique laughs or catchphrases were either changed or removed completely, "Dying Will" was replaced with "Deathperation", and for a series that was rated T+ for 16 year-olds had all of it's language censored to remove swearing and replace it with phrases such as "Holy Ham on Rye with Kraut!" or "Holy Hat!" Fans coming from scanlations felt the series was done an injustice and didn't want to support it. I don't mean to push but I'm really hoping for a comeback with proper treatment.

Submitted by TheWickedEraser on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 20:49

reborn should totally be added to SJ alpha

Enough Said

Submitted by Ashirogi6 on Wed, 03/07/2012 - 15:44

maybe they should put a chapter of different ones in then have the readers vote then continue with the most popular one after that.

Submitted by jaeicob on Sun, 09/09/2012 - 04:33

That sounds brilliant but i think they should vote for the top 3 series. I would probably pick

1.Beelzebub
2.Hunter x Hunter
3.either Madaka Box or Sket Dance

Submitted by Mkruxes on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 00:07

Submitted by VongolaNinja on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 08:38

For now, I would say Reborn!, given that it's one of my favorite series and perhaps one of the only ones Viz has right now that can be added without worrying about hiatus gaps, as in the case of D. Grayman and HunterXHunter, who seems to go on hiatus so often that I'm surprised it hasn't been cancelled a la Beet the Vandel Buster (granted, there's a big gap between the two, popularity-wise, but still).

So yeah, Reborn!

Submitted by dragon5174 on Sun, 04/08/2012 - 19:14

I'd love to see Reborn, HunterxHunter and Beelzebub.

Submitted by dUsTeAtEr on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 08:15

I'm surprised by how many comments there are :o

ok, since Hunter x Hunter was put on hiatus in Japan, it would be silly to put it in SJ alpha just to release old chapters. Beelzebub and Sket Dance have yet to be licensed, so we probably won't be seeing them any time soon. Gin Tama could be added, but I doubt many people read the manga - it's not one of the top series in terms of sales or readership on scanlation sites. The only remaining option is Reborn!. I hope someone from VIZ is reading this thread and listening to fan feedback, because most fans want Reborn! added to SJ Alpha even if it's too expensive to release volumes of the series.

Submitted by Toriko on Thu, 04/19/2012 - 14:30

Would be BEELZEBUB!!!

Submitted by dude13117 on Sat, 04/21/2012 - 11:20

I miss the Yu-Gi-OH! manga. I liked it every since it came out and I am really hoping that this series will be in WSJA.

I thing definetly Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee. But starting where it is in the US.

Submitted by Ashirogi6 on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 15:15

I think the best choices are probably Gintama and D. Grayman.

Submitted by GingFreecss55 on Wed, 06/13/2012 - 22:23

Please !! add JoJo !! Come on people, everyone start commenting JoJo !! Add volumes of it please !!! At LEAST !! add Phantom Blood.. I mean come on.. its ONLY five volumes..... even if it doesn't sell... its FIVE volumes ! And if it sells well add part 2, 4 - ongoing.

Submitted by Payne222 on Thu, 06/14/2012 - 02:41

Why is no one suggesting Kuroko's Basketball?! Bring that over to SJA, it'll do great with Americans and it's an awesome series!

Submitted by kotoryuu on Tue, 06/26/2012 - 15:15

Reborn hands down. Sket Dance would also be awesome.

Submitted by zeroflame16 on Wed, 06/27/2012 - 23:00

I say that Reborn and Hunter X Hunter should be added to SJA. 1) They are both great series 2) They both need more attention they are giving in the states as they are great series. 3) This would allow for new volumes for Reborn (I am caught up on Reborn (Wishing they would continue releasing new volumes in the states cause it is an excellent series))

Submitted by sagisu on Thu, 08/30/2012 - 10:23

Gintama should most definitely be added!!!!

Submitted by jkphantom on Mon, 09/03/2012 - 17:16

Rosario+Vampire Season II
Psyren (volume previews)

but it is way to mature, and it apparently also has a MA anime. The way it views girls is just disgusting.

Submitted by WeatherReport on Tue, 11/13/2012 - 15:50

I would simply ADORE it if we could get more Gintama in America, and just sticking it in from vol. 24 onward in Alpha actually wouldn't be that bad an idea, since it's best to just pick that one up from any point and go on from there...

A few others I'd promise to purchase are Sket Dance, Jojo's (continued onward, not jumping back to the 1st part though...) and Medaka Box NO MATTER WHAT...
