Pulling Strings in the ShadowsAs Naruto and Konoha struggle to stop the advances of the Akatsuki, it is easy to overlook other shinobi operating out of sight. Danzo, head of the Black Ops Foundation, casts an ominous shadow over Konohagakure, with his militaristic mindset and behind-the-scenes machinations. Bypassed in his quest to become Hokage over the years, Danzo has taken a more active approach lately in his quest to usurp power from the Fifth Hokage.
Power Threat
When the Senju and Uchiha clans were conspiring against each other for the title of Hokage, Danzo was a member of the Hawk faction that once opposed the Third Hokage. Not willing to concede what he rightfully viewed as his title to the Uchiha, Danzo and the other elders used Itachi as a spy and later on as an executioner of the clan. However, his plan was not completely successful, since Itachi left behind his kid brother and one other Uchiha, both of whom learned about Danzo's involvement with the slaughter.
Building a Strong Foundation
Danzo was the founder of a separate faction within the Black Ops — the Foundation. The Foundation's philosophy was the extreme opposite of the First and Third Hokage's pacifist teachings, taking a hard-line martial stance with regards to outsiders. Danzo competed with Master Sarutobi over the seat of Third Hokage and was unsuccessful. His dislike for Tsunade stemmed from her ties with previous Hokage, since she was the student of the Third Hokage, as well as the granddaughter of the First. Danzo planned to eliminate her from the Hokage's throne, but first, he assigned his subordinate Sai to take care of the remaining Uchiha...
Chaotic Undertaking
As Pain wreaked havoc on Konoha, Tsunade quickly gave out the order to recall Naruto. However, Danzo was lurking in the shadows and made sure the Nine-Tailed Fox was safely out of the Akatsuki's hands. Using the chaos as a cover to escape Tsunade's vigilance, Danzo decided to stay hidden underground until the worst was over. With Pain attacking the village mercilessly, Danzo hoped that the disaster would prove Lady Hokage's shortcomings as a leader. He believed that the lives lost during Pain's invasion were necessary sacrifices for him to become Hokage.
As the battle takes a turn for the worse in Konoha, will Danzo's schemes bear fruit and culminate with him being named Hokage? Tsunade's will to protect her people and her faith in Naruto are both strong, but are they enough to counteract Danzo's subversion? Find out in upcoming chapters of Naruto in SHONEN JUMP!
