REVIEW: This Week's Issue!

Cover
art by Masashi Kishimoto
Hey, it’s the first issue of the new Weekly Shonen Jump! And what a cover to start off with! I love the pop-art feel of this cover, it almost looks like something Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol would do. In case you’re wondering, we got this art as it is, we did not go crazy with the magic markers!

Naruto
by Masashi Kishimoto
Great chapter! There is a color spread in here of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura dressed in Samurai battle armor that I really hope to see cosplayed at a con this year. The chapter also has some characters we haven’t seen in a long time! And Naruto’s new power is pretty neat-o, too. High five, for the win!

One-Punch Man!
story by ONE, art by Yusuke Murata
The newest manga to join the Weekly Shonen Jump lineup! The background of this manga is interesting. It actually started as a web comic by mysterious mangaka, ONE. It got super popular and now Yusuke Murata, the artist of Eyeshield 21, is redrawing it. The story is also really funny. It’s about a goofy-looking overly powerful superhero and his frustrations trying to find a villain strong enough to challenge him. If you have a web comic, let this manga inspire you. You never know what can happen!

One Piece
by Eiichiro Oda
Fun chapter of One Piece! It has been a hoot seeing General Franky in action! Been waiting a long time to see him in a real fight! And there’s an amazing Usopp moment that reminded me of why I love him so much!

Nisekoi
by Naoshi Komi
Oh no! Miyamoto has lost her glasses and is totally blind without them! Can Raku and Onodera help her find them? And what kind of antics will they get up to while doing so?!

Bleach
by Tite Kubo
Man, Bleach has been on fire the last few weeks! I have to say, ever since Squad Zero has shown up, I have really been enjoying the manga. And Kon came back! This chapter is also amazing if you’re a Kenpachi fan, and he’s in my top three. Tite Kubo is knocking it out of the park!

Cross Manage
by Kaito
It looks like the girls’ hard work is finally paying off, as they’re pulling out all the stops in their first game. As a total Lacrosse noob, I find the sport intriguing. I hope to learn more about it in the upcoming chapters. I also wanna know more about the team members' backstory, especially the big girl with the super huge lips. I’m really curious about her!

Toriko
by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro
The fight we all knew was coming finally here! The evil Gourmet Corp. facing off against the IGO! Although I’m excited, I kind of wanted to see more of the Cooking Fest! Some of those contests looked pretty neat. That being said, this should be one heckuva fight!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal
Original Concept by Kazuki Takahashi
Story by Shin Yoshida, Art by Naohito Miyoshi
Production Support: STUDIO DICE
The duel between Kaito and Hishakaku turns dirty when Kyoji chucks Kaito’s younger brother off a building! It’s not bad enough Kaito was forced into the duel, but that's just plain dirty! The Numbers war is getting brutal!

Extras
Message From Masashi Kishimoto on SJ going simultaneous! Two page Yu-Gi-Oh! card article with a focus on the Abyss Rising Booster Pack Spellcaster-Type cards and monster cards. And an announcement Akira Toriyama fans should be happy to hear—we’re running a Kintoki one-shot in the next issue!

Hope you enjoyed our brand new first issue! We've worked our buns off trying to give you guys best the most up-to-date product yet, and we sincerely hope you're happy with the changes! Thanks for your support!

Personally, I liked the old tables of content, having the directory and current chapter displayed all on the same page was nice.

Naruto was good this week, I was surprised by how quick it went that I actually went back and counted how many pages there were. (17 btw)

One Punch Man is a good series, I am glad they added it but I made the mistake of catching up to Japan(ch22) last week because I thought that's where they would of started off.

sadly that's the only things I'm caught up on in this magazine so that's the only thing I can give my opinion on, I am catching up on the others for now.

Next week I will gladly give my thoughts on One Piece, I am almost caught up!

With all the hype I thought the 1st chapter would be long, boy was I wrong lol. Still glad to see it on here though!

Um am I the only one to notice that this isn't really a simultaneous release we are still a week behind I read this last week,.

Submitted by WesKR on Mon, 01/21/2013 - 15:22

Yeah I notice this too. The only way we'll be considered caught up is if the WSJ in Japan takes this week off.

Today was a big waste of hype, if WSJ in Japan skips this week then next week would be the official "simultaneous " release...

After doing some looking around on their twitter page, turns out that the scans online were just copies stolen before the release date.. Oh well, it's only 5 days behind illegal scans, it's worth the wait to have perfect quality manga rather than dark messy scans that occasionally contain typos/poor translation.

A great way to prevent this from happening would be to release content digitally a week in advance before print copies, doubt that'll ever happen though.

Submitted by AmaranthSparrow on Mon, 01/21/2013 - 21:33

It probably will never happen because of how stubborn Japanese business practices are. In Japan they're still very resistant when it comes to moving away from print and into digital publication.

However, I doubt even that would thwart the piracy. If Weekly Shonen Jump was published simultaneously in Japanese and English before the print edition went on sale in Japan... pirates would just find a way to steal the digital versions of the manga. Look at how the subbed anime from crunchyroll is leaked immediately, or how American comics are bootlegged as soon as they're released digitally.

Their only real option would be to take greater legal action against bootleggers, and even that can't stop it all.

From what it looks like this is actually simultaneous with Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan. Believe it or not the scanslations that are generally available online are actually almost a week AHEAD of Japan's official releases.

I'm lovin' the colors and the new design, it really feels like a magazine even on a tiny phone.

And I can't believe how much more excited I'm getting about Bleach, I think Squad Zero really made things interesting.

Is there a chance that there will be a package deal or something to buy the back issues? I wasn't a subscriber last year and I only got a couple of the issues as singles. I want to read the back chapters of Cross Manage.

Submitted by WesKR on Mon, 01/21/2013 - 23:29

same here, it's quite silly that you aren't able too.. No volumes available to catch up as well. I too would like to start Cross Manage but I only have issues 13+.

Seeing as USA SJ is now upgraded to simultaneous release with JP SJ, is VIZ going to license "Haikyuu" any time soon? It's running in the magazine. I really look forward to when Haikyuu gets licensed! ;U; Realy love the series~

Submitted by ebonyangel on Tue, 01/22/2013 - 00:21

I was disappointed that I had already read this week's chapters last week, but if piracy is the reason that makes more sense. Hey SJ! Start showing Kuroko no Basket! The US loves Basketball! lol

I really love the series Cross Manage. I hope it last longer than Barrage and Takama Ga Hara. I think One Punch Man sucks. The protagonist is not very appealing. I can't believe it has about 20 chapters in Japan.
One Piece was good. Naruto was okay, but the handing out Bijuu chakra thing was a bit too much. Bleach was good. And I always skip Toriko.

One-Punch Man is supposed to be more of a parody on superheroes..

I love all the hard work and time put into these releases but who is translating? I can barely hold in my laughter not from the Manga but from the translation of the characters. I'm no expert in the Japanese language but I'm pretty sure that the translations are being butchered. For example Kage Bunshin, literally Shadow Clone. Why not leave it at clone? I get what you're trying to do by using "doppelganger" instead of clone but honestly it just doesn't sound right. I've watched enough anime to understand a very small inkling of words and how they are expressed and to be honest I doubt orochimaru used the word "percieve" in Japanese. My point being to WSJ, is that you should translate to how the characters normally speak instead of flowering it to how you want. If anyone is confused about what I'm talking about, you'll find "doppelganger" and "perceive" spoken by Naruto and Orochimaru in this week's WSJ.

Submitted by yafada on Wed, 01/23/2013 - 08:41

They've always translated it as "doppelganger," from volume 1 of Naruto. Go into VIZmanga and look at the preview of volume 1. Changing to "Shadow Clone" now would probably confuse some and make people question the continuity of their translations. And "perceive" isn't really all that odd either, IMO given Orochimaru's character.

This weeks issue is last weeks and the newly released Naruto is out but not on here...what is the deal?

Submitted by chillywilly81 on Wed, 01/23/2013 - 10:50

What you read a week ago was ILLEGAL copies of the manga......what you got on Monday was the same thing that the Japanese got as well. You could of found this out by reading some of the other comments that have mentioned this already too. But I hope this helps ya out

Thank you chilly. Looks like everyone's still doesn't know about how scanlations work. They steal the chapters ahead of time and put them out even before the official release date. If they were working through official means or had the blessings of the creators (which would mean they would have to compensate the creators for all their hard work, WHICH THEY DON'T!!), then there's no way they'd be able to put it out earlier than the original Japanese version.

Submitted by yafada on Wed, 01/23/2013 - 12:54

I commented this on this week's Shonen Jump.

Some ideas I had. (copy-paste)

I think you guys should do a formal press release or something addressing scanlations rather than replying to every single person that thinks this (the chapters) is (are) late.

It would also be cool if you told us what is being done about them too or something. I would think VIZ has the power to do some DMCA takedowns.

-------------------------------------

Perhaps for the time being, VIZ could attempt to have Mangapanda and Mangastream delay their releases to Tuesdays or Wednesdays after it's released on here. Right now it would probably be unrealistic to have them stop doing Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece right off the bat, but it would put some of our minds at ease if they released it AFTER Japan and SJ subs here get the chapters. (at least we wouldn't see spoilers everywhere in that time we patiently wait for VIZ's release)

I think that they may comply with a request to delay the releases (as long as no other scan group just comes out and starts doing chapters in their place).

I like Nisekio: False Love.
It is a hilarious series, and it, along with Yugioh and Bleach, is what is convincing me to keep renewing my SJA account.
I love manga like this- keep it coming SJA!
How many volumes of this series are currently out? Viz only has 1...

Submitted by yafada on Sun, 01/27/2013 - 22:16

Nisekoi has five volumes out in Japan, I believe. Last time I asked, the VIZ guys said volume 2 would be coming soon. I wish all of them were out so I could buy them, but translations take time.

Submitted by TechGenusMaster on Mon, 01/28/2013 - 04:41

Thanks for the clear up.
I will be on the lookout for the volumes!

Submitted by yafada on Mon, 01/28/2013 - 10:03

In this week's Shonen Jump, it says volume 2 will be on Vizmanga on Feb 11.
