REVIEW: This Week's Issue!

Cover
art by Akira Toriyama
Hey, I recognize that bicep! I bet you’re wondering why Son Goku is gracing our latest cover. That’s because we’re running parts of the Dragon Ball Z manga in color! No, we didn't color it ourselves, this came straight from Japan! And in even bigger news—we're publishing it for the first time in color at the same time they are! DBZ fans, you don’t wanna miss this!

Dragon Ball
by Akira Toriyama
As a longtime DBZ fan, this is like candy for my eyes! Toriyama-Sensei’s beautiful art in color looks absolutely amazing. And whoever colored it, did a bang-up job. It’s almost like reading the anime!

Naruto
by Masashi Kishimoto
Interesting chapter of Naruto! And it’s has one of my all-time favorite characters—Orochimaru! Yes, he’s still alive! Sort of. I think. This chapter is also a nice break from all the fighting. Not that I mind the fighting, but it’s nice to get a little downtime. I have a feeling the end of the chapter will be the topic of much discussion!

Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration
by Nobuhiro Watsuki
Action-packed chapter of Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration! In this chapter of the re-telling of the original story—Kaoru versus Jin-e! Sanoske versus inui! Saito versus Gein! And more! You’ve may have seen these fights before, but you’ve never seen them like this!

One Piece
by Eiichiro Oda
Wow, cool chapter of One Piece! It looks like Trafalgar Law has got a few tricks up his sleeve. Tricks that he can use as bargaining chips against Doflamingo! This character is getting more and more intriguing! Also, I’ve heard he’s a popular character with the ladies. Ladies, can you confirm this?

Toriko
by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro
Seeing Toriko in action against Starjun is freaking A-MAZ-ING! And he goes all out on a barrage of cunning culinary attacks! Seriously, this fight is a blast. So much energy!

Cross Manage
by Kaito
Sakurai does some one-on-one coaching with Komatsu. And not just Lacrosse coaching, a little life coaching as well. Can he help her improve in both areas? Cross Manage is getting better and better. Since it began, I’ve been hoping we’d get into the backstory of the team characters, and now we are. Interesting stuff!

One-Punch Man!
story by ONE, art by Yusuke Murata
Bros before heroes! One bro wants to be the strongest person ever! The other bro is a mad scientist that helps his dream come true. Together they have the brains and brawn to rule the world! Can anyone bald stop them?

Bleach
by Tite Kubo
To get ready for the next attack on the Soul Society, Kenpachi continues training against the ruthless Retsu. I’m not going to spoil it here, but an interesting fact about Kenpachi’s background is revealed in this chapter! As a huge Kenpachi fan, I can’t believe Kubo Sensei found a way to make him even cooler.

Nisekoi
by Naoshi Komi
Wow, Chitoge’s mom is quite a lady, as Raku is finding out firsthand! What starts out as a simple errand snowballs into quite an adventure! Will he survive his first meeting with his “girlfriend’s” mother?

Blue Exorcist
by Kazue Kato
Rin and the other Exwires tackle another of the Seven School Mysteries of the True Cross Academy. There’s something dark and disturbing in the Hall of Portraits that’s traumatizing students! When the team goes in to root the evil out, Konekomaru surprises everyone by taking charge! Is this team finally starting to understand the concept of “teamwork”? I am really digging the current arc in Blue Exorcist. I love seeing the Exwires develop together, and I am looking forward to seeing them in action when the big showdown comes!

When are you doing the thing where you catch up to the Japanese releases? These are last week's chapters, which is better than a two-week gap, but it's still not "same day release" yet.

Haven't you read around the website, twitter, facebook that those releases that you are talking about are leaks, unofficial releases. These chapters that they released are chapters that got released on this weeks Weekly Shonen Jump issue.

If you don't believe me or Jump, go ask a Japanese Shonen Jump Reader on twitter or facebook and they will tell you that these chapter got released this Monday.

Thank you Zero for answering this question. The illegal scanlations you are reading are chapters that aren't even out in Japan. Please support the creators (something scanlators DO NOT DO) and read the official JUMP.

Wait, so scanlators get raw copies of Jump, and are able to fully translate them, half a week before it's even published anywhere? That is a pretty cool trick. Anyways, I did just pick up a subscription for the official Jump, since it's worth supporting, but I'm going to stick to actually reading it in scan form, since it's just a much more convenient reading format (each manga in its own file, no web-app interface to muddle through, etc.).

Not so much a "trick" as it is theft; they typically steal copies from shipments before the magazine actually goes on sale.

For future reference, you can always find the Japanese publication dates of Weekly Shonen Jump on the official Japanese website: http://www.shonenjump.com/j/

They also have an english version of the website: http://www.shonenjump.com/e/

They usually go on sale on Monday (as the English digital version does), apart from rare occasions, such as national holidays, which disrupt the publishing schedule. In such cases they are usually published on the Friday or Saturdy of the week before the holiday.

Is there any way to currently buy back issues of Shonen Jump? I'd like to read Rurouni Kenshin Restoration, but I signed up after it started.

Submitted by WesKR on Mon, 02/04/2013 - 17:10

There is not, looks like they removed several posts regarding previous issues as well...

Submitted by John Bae on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 11:07

On this site? I'm not aware of anyone removing anything so far...
Submitted by red12 on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 13:18

There was discussion about how maybe this is not being done because it may cut into volume sales. Then someone (was it you?) from SJ said that it is definitely something y'all were looking into.

Submitted by John Bae on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 13:24

Yoinks! I do remember making a remark like that, but didn't realize that it's not longer there.

Found out what happened. We moved servers on Monday and some posts were dropped out. It wasn't anything intentional (especially considering some of the staff's comments were lost as well).

So you guys are really looking into the whole pay issues thing? That would be so amazing, I love WSJA and I could care less if it's 4 days behind illegal scans, the quality of this is so great, no smudges and proper translations, if you want perfection you patiently wait for it.
My only regret is not signing up sooner, thus I wish for previous issues...

Dragon ball chapters are too short, we didn't even get to see Goku in it, DBZ chapters are like 14-15 pages long on average, while I believe today's average is 18..

This weeks Naruto was definitely interesting..
One Piece was good like always.
One Punch Man is just hilarious.

Still catching up on the other series, though I was surprised by how much I like Nisekoi.
Toriko seems like it should just change its name to One Piece 2, I mean that join a good way.

This week's issue of Shonen Jump was really packed with action, adventure, and intrigue.

Submitted by red12 on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 13:10

This week's issue is linking me to last issue's survey

Submitted by John Bae on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 14:25

Try again. it should be fixed. This was another one of those things that more than likely got messed up while switching servers. The redirect links were put in Monday, but were probably lost. Anyhoo, it works now.
Submitted by ParnAFD on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 18:48

john,

Every time I click on the survey link in my viz manga app on my iPhone, the link goes nowhere. When I try in my FireFox web browser it leads nowhere. Any ideas?

Submitted by John Bae on Thu, 02/07/2013 - 10:28

Hi ParnAFD, the survey works on our phones here. Can you check again? Also, the survey links are not hyperlinked on the web browser version, so you can't get to it from there. Please let us know if you're still having issues by writing to customersupportrep@viz.com.
Submitted by ParnAFD on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 18:46

World trigger could be cool. It would be more awesome if you could get Jump's newest rising star series "Novice Policewoman Kiriko-san". Any chance you'll pick that one up for the English jump since it's still early on in it's run??

Here is some Cross Manage fanart! I tried posting it in the mag comments, but the g from .png keeps getting removed?

If volume sales are the problem, what if they tried selling older issues at a higher price?
I know I would still buy the issues I missed at a higher price.
