Hanami Fan Art Contest!

We have heard your requests and we are now accepting fan art digitally! So to kick-start this glorious occasion, we're holding a Hanami-themed fan art contest! Hanami translates literally to "flower viewing" in English, but what it really means is "party time under the cherry blossoms."

1. Draw your favorite SJ characters partying under the cherry blossoms!

2. Go to shonenjump.viz.com/fan-art-submission

3. Follow the instructions to submit your fan art. Make sure to put "Hanami Fan Art Contest" in the submission box, so we know you're entering.

The contest runs from 03/11/13 to 04/15/13, so enter now!

So I'm slightly confused here; there's the new digital way to send in fan art, and there appears to be, from the terms and everything, that there are no restrictions on where it was created. Does this mean we can submit digital art, or does it still have to be traditional art scanned in from the computer?

One more question, the url part on the submission page, is there going to be some way to verify that it was actually the person who submitted it drew it? Or is it more of an honors system thing?

Submitted by John Bae on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 11:32

Hello! As for digital fan art, as long as you are the sole creator of that artwork, then it should be fine. Also, as for verification, we're counting on our readers' honesty! So please, be honest!
Submitted by VocaRena on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 14:32

Alright thanks!

Submitted by roxashikaru on Thu, 03/21/2013 - 18:29

Like can we do traditional artwork and if so then how do we send it in?? Please tell?

Submitted by Kikubi on Wed, 03/27/2013 - 12:25

You could scan it into the computer and send it. If you're going to do that, then I recommend you plan a picture with a somewhat bold color palette and a darker background. Remember, a scanner uses reflected light to pick up images. The more light that gets reflected off your picture, the harder it will be for your scanner to read it. If you try to scan a picture with large areas of pale colors or white, then the whole picture will end up getting washed out because the light bounces off of these areas and affects other parts as well.

For example: http://explodingchrysanthem.deviantart.com/art/Bittersweet-286955492 vs http://explodingchrysanthem.deviantart.com/art/Prismatix-354766572. The original version of that first one has a lot of really nice colors and shading, but the scanner couldn't pick them up because there was too much light bouncing off the large, white background. In the second one, the colors still aren't anywhere near a perfect copy of the original, but the dark background helped the scanner pick them up at least.

after i read the end of the issue i was pummped!

Submitted by shresthajason on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 14:00

What do I do? Landscape style or portrait style? Can it be non-SJ characters also? Can I put some writing and the SJ logo there? I'm just going to draw it and scan it on by computer. Paper has to be 8.5 x 11 and drawing must be in color, right?

Submitted by John Bae on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 16:51

Landscape or portrait is fine. Putting the SJ logo is fine as well. However, you can't use non-SJ characters. Also, just click on the RULES link above. That should have everything spelled out for you.

Any idea when "Number 88: Gimmick Puppet of Leo" will be out? Will it be shipped on March 15, 2013, since that is the due date to subscribe? I finished my hanami drawing yesterday, and now I need to color it. It has Naruto, Goku, Luffy, and Yuma on it.

Submitted by John Bae on Wed, 03/13/2013 - 11:37

When the shipping is confirmed, we will let everyone know.
Submitted by TechGenusMaster on Fri, 03/15/2013 - 17:58

No! Don't! Then we will have another mob of whiny fans when the cards do not "come on time"! I can't take it again!

Submitted by shresthajason on Wed, 03/13/2013 - 10:00

As I mean by non-SJ characters, I mean by old SJ characters (such as Yugi, Yusei, Jaden, Goku, etc.) and birds and pets and stuff.

Submitted by John Bae on Wed, 03/13/2013 - 11:37

That is okay!
Submitted by shresthajason on Wed, 03/13/2013 - 10:04

My drawing has only two cherry trees.

Submitted by John Bae on Wed, 03/13/2013 - 11:35

That is also okay!

If a new member of Shonen Jump won this contest, would they just get the 6-12 months of membership that comes with the prize added to their subscription? so they would have a year and a half or two years until their subscription expired instead of one year?

Submitted by John Bae on Mon, 03/18/2013 - 16:03

Yes, the extra time would just be tacked on.
Submitted by TechGenusMaster on Fri, 03/15/2013 - 17:59

If only I could draw... I have the perfect idea and everything....

Submitted by ChirpingChicken on Fri, 03/15/2013 - 21:27

Is it okay if my art is a crossover of different characters from different mangas?
For example, Luffy from One Piece, and then Gintoki from Gintama?

Submitted by John Bae on Mon, 03/18/2013 - 16:05

It's okay...as long as they're SJ characters.
Submitted by buggy0894 on Mon, 03/18/2013 - 17:32

Does it have to be digital?

Submitted by John Bae on Tue, 03/19/2013 - 14:05

Ok I have a question. Does the fanart have to be
Digital? I mean like can it be on regular paper with
Markers and stuff and if you can draw it on paper
How would I get it to them?

Submitted by John Bae on Tue, 03/26/2013 - 11:37

It doesn't have to be digital. Just send it in to us.

Hey, I heard that in Japan, a VJump Promo Card was "Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Horse Prince". Can we get cards in American SJ similar to the current archetypes that go with the new card types (like "Fire Fist", "Prophecy", "Madolche", "Mermail", Hazy Flame", "Heraldic Beast", etc.)?

Submitted by shresthajason on Mon, 03/25/2013 - 17:19

I need "Fire Fist" monsters.

Submitted by John Bae on Tue, 03/26/2013 - 11:37

Umm... wrong feature to make that comment. Try to stay on track if you can.
Submitted by Narunik on Tue, 03/26/2013 - 12:30

Hi! I was wondering.. Do you put the words" HANAMI FAN ART" in the box where you talk about the submission? Or the link to the art? o.o

Submitted by Primalx3 on Sat, 04/06/2013 - 18:20

Ninety something percent:

This was no easy task, lol. All that's left are: What kind of details should I add? I might have to also fix some lines.

Submitted by Narunik on Sat, 04/13/2013 - 22:12

I forgot to put down "HANAMI FAN ART CONTEST" in the submission box! I hope I get accepted!!

Submitted by Cisco9630 on Mon, 04/15/2013 - 02:37

Hello I pulled an all nighter and finished my piece. However, since its the last day, is it better to scan it and submit it that way, or is it OK to mail it?
Is mailing it fine as long as it is mailed by the 15th or does it have to arrive at its destination by the 15th?

Submitted by kuroko on Mon, 04/15/2013 - 05:26

can anyone tell me when we know who won the contest is it not until the 22nd when the drawings are featured
