Manga SFX

I know this is probably dumb, but in the last issue of SJ and in issues of SJ Alpha, I compared the SJ chapters to the SJ Alpha chapters in the magazine, and saw that while the SJ manga had english sound effects like FSHHHH and Alpha manga had Kanji or Japanese text instead with a little english translation underneath. Is the poor work because they have to translate the manga in a week? I hope in the future they can replace Kanji effects with English effects.

I prefer seeing the original kanji & just having the translation note underneath. Most of the time, the artist has integrated the kanji into the scene as part of the artwork! I like it when as much of the original artwork is preserved & only the dialogue is changed (to English).

Manga volumes should have the translated sound effects. Thanks for the feedback though!

I personally prefer the un-translated sound effects.

First of all, sound effects are written in katakana, not kanji, but that's aside the point.

Anyway, leaving sound effects untranslated is something that many manga publishers do intentionally. It is considered a strength by many readers (myself included) since it requires less alteration of the original artwork. Personally, I always thought it looked a little awkward to have big roman letters on the page in place of the original sound effects, but that's just me.

I realize that this issue is purely a matter of preference and there will always be people on either side, but I have to say I prefer the original sound effects left in for artistic purposes and hope that this continues.

I love seeing the sound effects in their original form especially with a small, tiny translation next to them. It keeps the manga look more like it's original form. I love it and wish the graphic novels were released like that.
