Because Weekly Shonen Jump took a break in Japan for Golden Week, Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha will be on break this week. The next issue will come out on May 21, 2012 at 10 AM pacific.

why not just... have the breaks come up at the same time as they do in Japan? Like, instead of literally the same week, why not wait until we get to the same chapter they took a break at?

That's exactly what they are doing.

There was no issue of Weekly Shounen Jump published in Japan on April 30th. (Golden Week is April 29 - May 5)

Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha is two weeks behind Japan, so it's taking a break on the week of May 14th.
